The "Journey Through Rhythm" extensive residency, is an interactive 40-45-minute weekly, bi weekly or monthly workshop/class for children from ages 3 and up, to adults of all ages, teaching the balance of mind, body, soul, art and culture, through various forms of creative rhythmic expression.
Students are taught the basic sounds and rhythms of the African Djembe drum, as well as other percussion instruments from around the world, thus encouraging further learning about international cultural history, through music and dance. Fun, interactive rhythmic exercises and interesting activities (such as body percussion, making rhythm with everyday objects, watching and then re-enacting videos of drumming and dancing from different countries, and making organically eco-conscious percussion instruments) are also featured in each class, engaging the students in ways allowing them to release their energy, express their creativity, and expand their awareness of the world around them.
The workshop will inspire the spirit of Renaissance and creative expression as well as cultural artistic enrichment, through also incorporating elements of writing, singing, dancing, acting, "songwriting for kids by kids", painting, etcetera. Throughout the intensive workshop, participants will constantly be encouraged to offer any of their extra talents, which could enhance the rhythmic music shared within the group.
The classes will usually culminate in a final performance by the students, making up a unique rhythm ensemble consisting of: Djembe drummers, body percussionists, percussionists playing hand made organic eco-conscious percussion instruments which they constructed in class, dancers, etc. The performance will also showcase the students’ various other talents and art, ranging from written lyrics and poetic lines, acting, singing, a painted backdrop set, and iPhone camera filmmaking, documenting the performance to be shared and viewed by the students’ parents, on a private You Tube channel.
